John Hung, 72, is from Hong Kong and immigrated to New York in 1962 at with his family, being the youngest of three brothers. When he was in Hong Kong, he would work at his parents’ neighborhood candy shop earlier than the age of 10. Frustratingly, he couldn’t eat the candy that he was selling. Three years after the Hung immigrated to New York, his parents opened up another shop, where he continued to work as soon as he got out of school. Even throughout high school when his peers were going bowling and shopping after school, he worked at his parents’ shop. Sometimes he even worked until 2AM, which caused his mother doubt over whether coming to New York was a good idea. Nonetheless, Hung stayed and not only found his place, but volunteered at Tzu Chi to improve to the community since 2001.
“My parents had a wonderful, small candy shop in Hong Kong, but we [Hung and his two brothers] couldn’t touch a single piece.”
