Sauk King Yu (center) always put other people above herself. She spent her entire life sacrificing and thanklessly working to provide her family better lives and opportunities. To me, she was my 婆婆. Throughout my childhood, she provided me with lavish meals, all packed up and ready for me to eat on the way home from school. There wasn’t a single time that I didn’t enjoy a luxurious feast of an “afternoon snack” on the M11 bus on my way home from school. From small pieces of coffee-flavored hard candies to big take-out containers of hot noodle soup, she always had something to feed me and always presented these offerings with the biggest smile. She was loved by everyone who knew her, a grandma to all.

“我來了!” (I’m here!) – a phrase 婆婆 exclaimed when she surprised us with her presence.
